Passport & Boarding Pass Wedding Invitations: Wording, Ideas & a Matching Travel Theme

Passport & Boarding Pass Wedding Invitations: Wording, Ideas & a Matching Travel Theme

I love an invitation that makes guests smile before they have read a word.

A passport wedding invitation does that, with a boarding pass RSVP tucked inside.

These are digital templates: you type your names into the design in your browser with Corjl (no software to install), then download the file and print it.

Which travel wedding invitation do you want: the classic or the passport version?

You are choosing between the classic invitation and the passport version, and the passport version already comes with its boarding pass RSVP. The classic suite is a 5x7 invitation with an RSVP card and a details card. The passport set is a folded 3.5x5 passport booklet, a 3.5x5 details card and an 8.5x3.5 boarding pass RSVP.

"Boarding pass" here means the RSVP card inside the passport set. The boarding pass save the date is its own card, so there is no stand-alone ticket invitation.

If you print at home, yes: you trim each piece to size, and the passport booklet is folded by hand. Three 8.5x3.5 boarding pass pieces fit on one letter-size sheet, so a paper trimmer makes it quick. Corjl Prints is the other route and ships within the US only.

Which envelopes do you need?

The 3.5x5 folded passport booklet and its details card need A1 envelopes. The 5x7 classic invitation fits A7 envelopes. A10 envelopes fit the 8.5x3.5 boarding pass RSVP with a little room to spare.

How do you word the boarding pass RSVP and save the date?

In the passport set, the boarding pass is the RSVP card, and the boarding pass save the date is its own card. Neither is a stand-alone invitation, though many couples search for this look as a boarding pass wedding invitation or a plane ticket wedding invitation. Give every ticket field a wedding job: the flight number is your date, the gate is your venue, the boarding time is your ceremony time and the seat is the RSVP. Guests understand a ticket at a glance, so the wording does the explaining for you.

Copy-and-paste boarding pass wording

  • Save the date: Now boarding: [Name] and [Name] are getting married. Flight [MMDD], from [home city] to [destination]. Gate: [venue]. Boarding at [ceremony time].
  • RSVP boarding pass: Your seat is waiting. Please reply by [date] at [website]. Number of passengers: ___. Meal choice: ___.
  • Details card: Baggage allowance: pack light layers for the evening. Ground transport: the shuttle leaves [hotel] at [time]. Questions? Contact [name] at [email].

Use this key when you fill in your own.

Ticket field What to write Example
Passenger The guest name, or a joke for the whole group Mr. and Mrs. Hale
Flight number Your wedding date as four digits Flight 0614 for June 14
From / To Where you live and where you are marrying Chicago to Tulum
Gate Your ceremony venue Gate: Casa Sol Garden
Boarding time Ceremony start time Boarding at 4:30 PM
Seat The RSVP deadline Seat: reply by April 1
Class Dress code Class: cocktail attire

How do you word a passport wedding invitation?

Word a passport invitation page by page, borrowing the headings of a real passport and filling them with your details. The cover carries your names, the inside pages carry the invitation and the loose details card carries the practical information. Guests stay curious as they turn each page, and nothing gets crowded onto one side.

Page Wording idea
Cover PASSPORT. [Name] and [Name]. A destination wedding.
Inside left Issued to: [guest names]. Destination: [location]. Date of departure: [date].
Inside right Together with their families, [Name] and [Name] invite you to celebrate their wedding on [date] at [venue], [city].
Details card Travel advisory: dress code, hotel block, shuttle times, weather notes and where to find your wedding website.
Boarding pass RSVP Your seat is reserved. Return by [date] and we will stamp your passport.

That last line sets up the stamp idea in the DIY section below. If your wedding is somewhere guests need extra planning, add a line on the details card with the closest airport and the best arrival day, because that is the first question every guest asks.

When do you send the save the date, the invitation and the rest?

Send a boarding pass save the date or a passport save the date 8 to 12 months before a destination wedding, then the invitation 3 to 4 months before, and let every other printed piece repeat the same map and lettering. Matching pieces look planned without costing you design time, and guests recognize your wedding the moment the envelope arrives.

When What goes out
8 to 12 months before Save the date (boarding pass, postcard or digital card)
3 to 4 months before Invitation, RSVP and details (classic suite or passport set)
With the invitation Map envelope liner and address labels
At the wedding Welcome sign, seating, programs, menus and table numbers
After the wedding Map thank you card

Marrying in one specific place? I also make phone-sized digital save the dates for Croatia, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Greece, Mexico, France, Germany, Australia and Florida. Look for your country in the travel collection. For envelope liners, the step-by-step is in the envelope liner guide.

How do you set up the day-of details for a travel themed wedding?

Start with a welcome sign at the entrance, a schedule sign styled like an airport departures board, travel-style table numbers and a guest book that matches. Guests then move through the day without asking where to go, and your photographer gets a styled corner at every stop.

A welcome sign and a departures board

A departures board is a schedule sign: list each event on its own line, with a time and a "gate" such as the ceremony lawn or the terrace bar. Use the custom sign template for the board and put the welcome sign at the entrance.

Table numbers named after destinations

Name each table after a place instead of a number, and guests find "Paris" on the seating chart and walk to the table with Paris on it. A round table seats 8 to 10, so 120 guests means about 12 destinations. The sets are editable, so you swap in the places you like and print the tables you need.

How do you choose the destinations? Start with places the two of you have been together, then add your honeymoon spots, the town where you met and the cities guests are flying in from. Table 1 can be where you met. Guests love finding their own hometown at a table.

Your seating chart needs the same names, so the destinations match on the sign and on the tables. The world map seating chart and the grey world map seating chart both work. If you want every guest named on the table itself, there are table cards that list the guests seated at each table. The table number how-to shows how to duplicate and rename each card.

A guest book guests sign on a globe or a map

Let guests sign a globe or a map instead of a book. I covered the idea in item 11 of my wedding guest book alternatives guide, and these are the travel signs that go with it. Pick one to sign on, and set a small sign beside it so guests know what to do.

Does the travel theme work for a bridal shower or a welcome party?

Yes, and it is quick to set up. A travel theme bridal shower is one of the easiest themes to style because the invitation does the work. The shower invitation is a watercolor world map design, so it is not a passport or a boarding pass, but it shares the map look of the passport set and matches the signs and favor tags. You can host it at home, and nobody has to board a plane.

Send the bridal shower invitation, then hand each guest a bachelorette itinerary at the door so the weekend schedule is easy to follow. For games, the Love Is a Journey set fits nicely. My bridal shower planning guide has a six-week timeline you can use with any of these.

The travel idea also works for a baby shower. Adventure Awaits is the baby shower version, with its own designs, and you can see it in the Adventure Awaits section of my fall baby shower themes post.

Which easy DIYs can you add to a travel wedding?

These four are optional extras, so skip them if you are short on time. Each one adds to your printed pieces rather than changing them.

Stamp the RSVP (20 minutes)

When a boarding pass RSVP comes back, press a travel stamp on it and keep it in a box or an album. It gives you a keepsake record of who is coming. Supplies: a passport stamp set, an ink pad and the returned RSVPs.

A postcard guest book (10 minutes)

Set out blank postcards and a few pens beside your guest book sign. Guests write a note and address it to you, and you mail one to yourselves each anniversary. Supplies: blank postcards, pens and a small box.

A pin-your-hometown map (15 minutes)

Mount a world map on a board, set out a cup of push pins and let guests pin where they flew in from. Add a small sign that says "Where did you fly in from?" Supplies: a map board and push pins.

A luggage tag craft station (20 minutes)

Set out blank white faux leather luggage tags and markers. Guests write on a tag and tie it onto their welcome bag. If guests would rather style paper tags, use the marryful favor tag template. Supplies: blank white faux leather tags and markers.

How do you edit and print the templates?

Type over your names, date and venue, and download a print-ready file. A phone or tablet works as well as a laptop. Edit every line in Corjl and the layout stays in place while you type. If a long venue name looks tight, shorten it or ask me and I will take a look. Every listing has a free demo, so you can try it before you pay. The edit guide walks through it step by step, and the printing guide covers printing.

None of this is required. These are the pieces I would pick for sending the invitations and for the DIYs.

Where to print

The invitations and the welcome sign are worth printing professionally. Corjl Prints is my first choice: it sits inside the same editor, so you order the prints without leaving your design, and they arrive on heavier card than a home printer can take.

Prints of Love (affiliate link) is a specialist stationery printer with lovely quality and free envelopes. Code marryful10 takes 10% off.

I earn a commission if you order through it, at no extra cost to you. The favor tags and labels print fine at home.

Passport and boarding pass invitation FAQ

What is in a passport wedding invitation set?

The passport set has a folded 3.5x5 passport booklet, a 3.5x5 details card and an 8.5x3.5 boarding pass RSVP card. The classic suite has a 5x7 invitation, with an RSVP card and a details card at 5.5x4.25.

When should you send a destination wedding save the date and invitation?

Send the save the date 8 to 12 months ahead and the invitation 3 to 4 months ahead. Destination guests need time to book flights and hotels, so earlier is kinder than later.

Which envelope sizes do the travel invitations need?

The folded passport booklet and its details card need A1 envelopes, the 5x7 classic invitation fits A7 envelopes, and the 8.5x3.5 boarding pass RSVP fits A10 envelopes with a little room to spare.

Can I use the travel theme if we are not marrying abroad?

Yes. Plenty of couples use a passport or boarding pass invitation for a hometown wedding because they love to travel. Change the gate to your venue and the destination to your city.
